Baron O’ Buchlyvie Gin

May 10, 2019

I  created a community owned gin brand for the village of Buchlyvie, near Stirling, to encourage more people to stop and spend time in the village whilst giving the community something to be proud of. The brand takes inspiration from the famous Clydesdale horse – The Baron O’ Buchlyvie – who was bred by a local farmer in 1900. Heavy horses like the Baron were frequently bred by local farmers to help them work the land more efficiently before mechanisation. Whilst the horses are no longer required, farming is still at the heart of this community. The brand reflects the community spirit that is still prevalent in rural communities and will donate it’s profits to be used to benefit the village.

Black Diamonds

May 10, 2019

Black Diamonds is a typographic publication which explores the history of the British Deep Coal Mining Industry.  This publication looks at coal mining at 4 key stages in the industry’s existence, starting with it’s origins and ending with the total loss of the industry after the closure of the last deep coal mine. I have used a limited colour palette influenced by the different types of coal and a slightly textured paper to reflect the harsh working conditions that miners faced.

VADvent

June 7, 2018

V&A Dundee put out a call for Dundee-based students to propose a design for a door for their digital advent calendar to run throughout December 2017. My proposal was based on the classic British Christmas image of a robin in a snowy winter scene but to give it a more modern, abstract take by creating the image as a layered paper cut. I was surprised and delighted when V&A Dundee chose me – as one of 25 selected designers –  to actually create my design for door number 16. All details within the design were cut by hand using just a scalpel.

Screen to Stage

May 3, 2018

Poster design based on the adaption of a film into a stage production. Working in a pair, I had to watch the assigned film – In The Mood for Love – and create a set design based upon the movie to be photographed for the poster.  The poster design is based on the skyscrapers of Hong Kong where the film is set and is also inspired by the screens and shutters which appear throughout the film.

Left Behind

May 3, 2017

Left Behind is a photographic zine based on the effects the tide has on a beach. The zine features all my own photography, taken on location at St Andrew’s West Sands. The 16-page zine is printed in black and white on sugar paper to show the textures and patterns found.  It also features two different overlay covers – one acetate and the other tracing paper – to add extra detail without competing with the images.

Riva Lodge Hotel

July 8, 2015

Riva Lodge Stationery Set

The brief was to design a corporate identity for a boutique hotel in Vail, Colorado which gives the impression of luxury but is sympathetic to it’s natural surroundings whether that be through the colour palette, logo design or both. The final design had to be applied to business stationery, toiletry packaging, towels, a robe & slippers and a keyring.

My final design is a simplistic and minimalist logo that takes inspiration from the silhouette of the mountains surrounding Vail. The design is quite versatile and can be inverted to create an alternative logo that is just as effective as the original. The main colour I used for the design is a dark green that was inspired by the vast swathes of forestry around Vail.

My design is based on the classic British Christmas image of a robin in a snowy scene and was created using layers of paper that I cutout by hand and then stuck together to make the final piece
